Saint John, NB 7/14/09- This Saturday was supposed to be an off day for Lonnie Sommerville as he along with his Lonnie Sommerville Racing team had plans to prep for this weekend’s IWK 250 at Riverside Int’l Speedway with a Sunday afternoon test session.  However, fellow race driver and friend, Matt Harris, made a phone to call Sommerville Saturday morning asking him to pilot his car in the Best of the Best super late model mini-series at Speedway 660 due to the fact that Harris had to have debris surgically removed from his eye Friday afternoon due to a work related incident.

Both Sommerville and Harris competed earlier in the year in race one of the Best of the Best series with Harris winning his first super late model race of the year while Sommerville had mechanical problems late in the race forcing him to an early exit.

Sommerville, who helps maintain Harris’s car, timed in third quickest for the Coast Tires Pro Stock 100.  On lap three of the 100 lap event, Chris Duncan had something break on his car causing him to go around in front of the field taking out several cars.  Sommerville was able to dodge Duncan’s spinning car and battle for the top spot afterwards, taking the lead at lap five then dusting the field from there on out and picking up his first win of the 2009 racing season.

“This is pretty wild how this all happened in about a twelve hour span and then to be standing in victory lane after a night that I was planning on sitting in the stands is unreal. I would have never thought that I would have gotten my first win in someone else’s car but I’ll take it because it feels pretty good right now and I really have to thank Matt for giving me the call to drive because he could have easily just not raced. This is also my first win with my daughter Madison here with me so that’s just icing on the cake,” said Sommerville. “I had to joke with my guys sitting in the stands after the race that the reason I won was because I finally got a good crew (Harris’ crew) behind me that knows what they are doing.”

Gary Crooks, Sommerville’s crew chief on the Carquest Maritime Pro Stock Tour, is also the crew chief on Harris’s #87 Chevy Impala which made the transition of Sommerville’s relief duty that much easier.

“I know to most people this would be pretty hard to pull off, but working with these two guys on a regular basis makes a huge difference. They have different driving styles but its all about having communication and being on the same page when it comes to adjusting on the car and that’s what we did and it shows,” added Crooks after the race.
