Saint John, NB, Canada 5/27/09- Champions are often made by how they react to adversity; so if in September the 2009 CARQUEST Maritime Pro Stock Tour championship is within reach of the Lonnie Sommerville Racing team, they can reflect on the season opener at Scotia Speedworld as the championship difference maker. Sommerville bounced back from a lap four spin to bring home an impressive fifth place finish after battling from the rear of the twenty six car field.

The drop of the green flag under grey and cold conditions didn’t put a damper on the early racing action. That action quickly turned to trouble for the #23 A.E. McKay Builders Chevy Impala when battling with defending tour champion Wayne Smith ended in contact sending the two spinning in front of the entire field. Luckily enough for Lonnie no contact or damage occurred however, series officials placed all cars involved in the incident to the rear of the field. One positive was the fact that ninety plus laps of racing allowed Sommerville to meticulously make his way through the field.

While time and remaining laps may have been on the team’s side the caution flags were not. After the early yellows to begin the 100 lap event, the remaining eighty one laps of racing went clean and green which prevented #23 machine from tightening up to the field and having a shot at a top three finish.

“I was pretty upset at the beginning of the race after the incident with Wayne (Smith), but after talking to my guys it could have gone either way. We were just lucky enough not to get tore up and race our way from the back and finish fifth. If you’re going for a championship it’s all about how you fight adversity and today we made the most of a bad situation,” stated Sommerville after the race.

The team will have no time to waist as they will prepare for the 100 lap “Best of the Best” race at Speedway 660 hosted by Lonnie Sommerville Racing team sponsor Max 1 Advanced Synthetic this weekend on Saturday May 30th.
